Isle Royale, located in Lake Superior, is 45 miles long and 9 miles wide, making it the fourth largest freshwater lake island in the world!
Isle Royale National Park consists of Isle Royale itself and over 400 islands as well as the surrounding Lake Superior waters.
The Wolf/Moose population on the island is the subject of an ongoing study conducted by the MI DNR in conjunction with the United States National Parks. Isle Royale is one of the only places in the USA where Wolves and Moose live without any bears present. The DNR can closely watch the impact that a growing wolf population has on the moose and vice versa.
Indigenous people used to call the island "Minong," literally meaning "a good place to get copper." There is evidence of the first mining on the island as much as 4,500 years ago!
