Hartwick Pines
Hartwick Pines State Park is a public recreation area located near
Grayling, MI. The park includes a campground, a logging museum,
a visitor center, and a network of hiking trails.
The Old Growth Forest Trail is a loop, 1¼ miles long, that leads to a stand of White Pines that are estimated to be between 350 and 375 years old. The tallest trees are between 150 and 160 feet tall.
The wooded AuSable River Foot Trail is approximately 3 miles long and crosses the East Branch of the AuSable River two times.
The Mertz Grade Trail is approximately 2 miles long and runs in part along an early logging railroad spur, The Mertz Grade.
The White Pine can grow to heights over 200 feet and up to 3.5 feet in diameter.
An easy way to identify the White Pine is to remember that the number of letters in “white”, five, equals the number of needles in the cluster. Needles typically grow between 2½ - 5 inches long.
