 Crinoid Fossils
The state of Michigan used to be covered by a warm, shallow sea. Crinoids, also known as sea lilies, are related to starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. Many crinoids attach themselves to the seafloor with a long stalk made up of stacks of calcareous rings called ossicles. The ossicles fossilize very well, while the delicate featherly arms used to catch prey are rarely preserved.
